And although you can’t choose your children’s friends, you can have a positive influence on the relationships they make throughout their formative years. Use the following strategies to help your children to build positive relationships with their friends. ● Encourage diversity(多樣性). 36 In addition to exposing your kids to more diversity, it will also help them learn more about themselves. ● Avoid criticism. Avoid criticizing friendships, but be honest with your kids when you’re concerned._____37_____This may make them defensive and less receptive to what you have to say. Do be open and willing to listen to what they have to say, and talk about what makes you nervous. ● 38 If you feel that one of your child’s friends is having a negative influence on him, invite that friend to spend time with you and your child together so that you can have a positive influence on the relationship. ● Engage in community service. Engage your family in service and volunteering (or join a social group) through a local church, school, or other nonprofit organization. 39 ● 40 When talking about a friend who has a negative influence on your child, focus your comments on that friend’s behaviors, not on her personality. For example, instead of calling your child’s friend irresponsible for smoking, you could point out that the behavior has a negative effect on her health and recommend ways for your child to help her quit. A. Offer advice. B. Get involved. C. Don’t condemn your child’s friends. D. Help your kids find the group that they fit with. E. These events can be great places to meet new friends. F. It’s important to develop positive relationships with family members as well. G. Challenge your children to get to know kids from many different backgrounds. 完形填空 A boy walked into a candy store with his father and since he was just 6 years old, he was surprised by so many candies on offer. “It’s amazing. A I think a close friend is someone you get on really well with, who helps you when you have problems, who gives you advice, and who always has time for you. I didn't use to have many close friends when I was at school or at university as I was very shy, but now I have several. They are all women — I don't really have any close friends. I know a lot of people but mainly through work, and the kind of social occasions (場(chǎng)合) when we meet are business dinners and evening parties. I think if you come from a really close family, then friends are a bit unnecessary. The little free time I have I prefer to spend with my family. — I think a close friend is someone who you've known for a long time, and who you still get on with. They probably have similar hobbies to you so you can do things together. I've got three close friends who I was at high school with and we often go away together (without our parents of course). We always go camping and somewhere we can go walking, play football and be outside in the open air. — For me close friends are the people you spend your free time with. I go out at weekends with a group of people — there are about seven of us, and I'd say we are all close friends. We also live near each other. I don't think you can have close friends at a distance (在遠(yuǎn)處); you need to be able to see each other often. But I don't think you need to be doing the same things. I mean I'm at university but none of my friends are. — 1. What does Richard say about friends? A. It's hard to make friends at work. B. They're less important than family. C. Friends need to have a lot in common. D. Women and men can't be close friends. 2. What does David enjoy? A. Physical activity. B. Parent-child camp. C. Going to evening parties. D. Playing out in the open alone. 3. What do we know about Ana's friends? A. They are college students. B. They are doing the same things. C. They don't live far away. D. They don't see each other often. 4. Who has more friends now than before? A. Ana. B I’ve loved my mother’s desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it as mother sat doing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be the most wonderful thing in the world. Years later, during her final illness, mother kept different things for my sister and brother. “But the desk,” she’d said again, “it’s for Elizabeth. ” I never saw her angry, never saw her cry. I knew she loved me; she showed it in action. But as a young girl, I wanted heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter. They never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was “too emotional”. But she lived “on the surface”. As years passed I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did forgive me. I posted the letter and waited for her answer. None came. My hope turned to disappointment, then little interest and, finally, peace — it seemed that nothing happened. I couldn’t be sure that the letter had even got to her. I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not. Now the present of her desk told, as she’d never been able to, that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside — a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded(折疊) and refolded many times. Give me an answer, my letter asks, in any way you choose. Mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words. 5. The writer began to love her mother’s desk ______. A. after Mother died B. before she became a writer C. when she was a child D. when Mother gave it to her 6. The passage shows that ______. A. mother was cold on the surface but kind in her heart to her daughter B. mother was too serious about everything her daughter had done C. mother cared much about her daughter in words D. mother wrote to her daughter in careful words 7. The word “gulf” in the passage means ______. A. deep understanding between the old and the young B. different ideas between the mother and the daughter C. free talks between mother and daughter D. part of the sea going far in land 8. What did mother do with her daughter’s letter asking forgiveness? A. She had never received the letter. B. For years, she often talked about the letter. C. She didn’t forgive her daughter at all in all her life. D. She read the letter again and again till she died. 9. What’s the best title of the passage? A. My letter to Mother B. Mother and Children C. My mother’s Desk D. Talks between Mother and Me C It’s not easy being a teenager---nor is it easy being the parent of a teenager. You can make your child feel angry, hurt or misunderstood by what you say without realizing it yourself. It is important to give your child the space he needs to grow while gently letting him know that you’ll still be there for him when he needs you. Expect a lot from your child, just not everything. Except for health and safety problems, such as drug use or careless driving, consider everything else open to discussion. If your child is unwilling to discuss something, don’t insist he should tell you what’s on his mind. The more you insist, the more likely that he’ll clam up. Instead, let him attempt to solve things by himself. At the same time, remind him that you’re always there for him, should he look for advice or help. Respect your teenager’s privacy. Never read his mail or listen to personal conversations. Teach your teenager that the family phone is for the whole family. If your child talks on the family’s telephone for too long, tell him he can talk for 15 minutes, but then he must stay off the phone for at least an equal period of time. This not only frees up the line so that other family members can make and receive calls, but teaches your teenager moderation(節(jié)制). Or if you are open to the idea, allow your teenager his own phone that he pays for with his own pocket money or a part-time job. 10. 14. A. 語(yǔ)法填空 There is a lovely panda.
